George Washington (February 22, 1732 – December 14, 1799) was an American statesman and soldier who served as the first President of the United States from 1789 to 1797. He was one of the Founding Fathers of the United States and is often referred to as the “Father of His Country.”
Washington was born in Westmoreland County, Virginia, into a family of moderate means. He was educated at home and later became a surveyor. During the French and Indian War, he quickly rose through the ranks, eventually becoming a Colonel and commander of the Virginia Regiment.
In 1759, Washington married Martha Dandridge Custis, a widow with two children. He retired from military service and returned to his estate, Mount Vernon, in Virginia. He became a successful planter and was elected to the Virginia House of Burgesses in 1758.
In 1774, Washington was elected as a delegate to the First Continental Congress. He was appointed commander-in-chief of the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War. He led the Continental Army to victory over the British and in 1783, the war ended with the Treaty of Paris.
In 1787, Washington was elected as a delegate to the Constitutional Convention and helped to draft the United States Constitution. He was unanimously elected as the first President of the United States in 1789 and served two terms in office. He was re-elected in 1792 and served as President until 1797.
After his presidency, Washington retired to his estate at Mount Vernon, where he died on December 14, 1799. He was buried at Mount Vernon.
