In 1774, Washington was elected as a delegate to the First Continental Congress. He was appointed commander-in-chief of the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War. He led the Continental Army to victory over the British and in 1783, the war ended with the Treaty of Paris.

In 1787, Washington was elected as a delegate to the Constitutional Convention and helped to draft the United States Constitution. He was unanimously elected as the first President of the United States in 1789 and served two terms in office. He was re-elected in 1792 and served as President until 1797.

After his presidency, Washington retired to his estate at Mount Vernon, where he died on December 14, 1799. He was buried at Mount Vernon.
